There is something special about gathering around your table. It may be the kitchen table we've sat around a hundred times. A beautiful dining room table set for the holiday. A picnic table in your backyard or even a few chairs pulled together when there isn't enough room for everyone. But somehow when food is shared and people gather the ordinary moments have a profound way of becoming meaningful ones.

 

Your table has always been more than just a place where you eat at. It's where the conversations begin. Stories get told. Someone laughs until everyone else starts laughing until your stomach hurts, too. Children hear family stories they've never heard before. Children do their homework. Friends can catch up after too much time apart. Birthdays are celebrated and holidays then become traditions. However, sometimes the most important conversations happen when no one planned for them at all.

Food Has a Wonderful Way of Bringing People Together

Making your favorite meals can be comforting in ways few things are. The smells of something baking in the oven or its the feeling you get when making your familiar family recipe together. Or the best is getting together with friends at your favorite restaurant or simply hosting a party. Create a family game night while eating pizza it can be fun, too. The joys of laughter and creating memories can have an amazing feeling. But, what matters most is the shared time together.

Make Room For Conversation 

One of the best things about gathering around the table is it gives you permission to slow down. Put your phones away for a little while. Ask a questions that you wouldn't normally ask. Tell an old stories. Ask and talk about everyone's week. Find out from your children what made them laugh today. Better yet, pull out a deck of cards or your favorite board game to play after dinner. Don't worry if everything isn't picture-perfect. A crowded table with mismatched dishes, people talking over one another, crumbs on the floor and laughter coming from the next room can be great signs of a life being lived together.

Create Traditions From Ordinary Moments

With traditions you don't always have to begin with a big grand plan. Say Friday night pizza can become a tradition. Traditions can be traveling every year, summer cookouts, Fall soup nights, holiday baking or simply inviting friends over once a month. Over time, these repeated little moments become part of your family's story. We often do not realize that we're creating memories while we're creating them.

 

Invite Someone In

Gathering can also extend beyond our immediate families. Invite the neighbor over who lives alone. Welcome a new friend. Host a casual potluck. Invite new friends into your circle. Hospitality doesn't require a perfect home or an impressive menu. Sometimes, it simply means there's room for you here. That feeling of being welcomed, included and remembered can mean far more than we realize.

 

The Heart of the Table

Years from now we may not remember whether the napkins matched or whether dinner came out exactly as planned but we'll remember the laughter. Grandma's recipe. Dad's stories. Our children's silly jokes or the friend who stayed talking after dinner was finished. The joys of someone blowing out birthday candles. The holiday meals shared with family and friends. The game nobody wanted to lose at. The conversation that helped us understand one another a little better. Perhaps that's why gathering around the table really is good for the soul. Because while we may come to the table for food, it's what nourishes us most often the time we spend with one another.

This week don't wait for that special occasion. Make something to eat that you enjoy. Invite someone over for coffee. Gather. Eat. Talk. Laugh. Stay Awhile.
