Create Your Own Outdoor Adventure
10 Unforgettable Things to Do at Zion National Park & Beyond

The best way to reconnect with yourself, with your family and with life is to simply step outside. I don't know about you but there is something refreshing about trading our everyday routines for an open trail or seeing a beautiful view or going on a little travel adventure.

Whether you're traveling solo, planning a couples getaway or taking the family on a road trip this is a place that can remind you of how beautiful the natural world can be. The Zion National Park its located in southern Utah. It offers an extraordinary place to explore with its towering sandstone cliffs, winding Virgin River, desert landscapes and seemingly endless views. At Zion it invites visitors to slow down, look around and experience nature from an entirely different perspective.

According to the National Park Service Zion has welcomed 4,984,525 recreation visits in 2025, nearly reaching the five-million mark and ranking the second among America's National Parks to visit. At Zion the adventure does not have to mean conquering the hardest trail such as Angels Landing. Yet, there are experiences for all different ages, interests and ability levels. Such as, going on peaceful walks and scenic drives, family activities or doing challenging hikes. The National Park Service highlights hiking, biking, camping, ranger programs and exploring areas such as Kolob Canyons among the many ways visitors can experience the park.

Here are the 10 experiences to add to your Zion adventure list.

1. Experience Zion Canyon ~ For a first visit, I'd begin with the landscape that made Zion famous. Zion Canyon surrounds visitors with enormous sandstone walls, the Virgin River and beautiful visuals of dramatic formations that are majestic in appearance throughout the day. Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction plan to give yourself time to process the magnitude of it all.

In addition, you can ride the canyon shuttle when it's operating, get off at different stops, take photos and enjoy short walks along the way. During the shuttle season private vehicles generally cannot use Zion Canyon Scenic Drive so checking the Park Service for information about transportation before your visit. It can make planning your day much easier.

Adventure Idea: Give each family member a small journal. Have everyone write down about their exploring day and make sure to take photographs to remember their favorite views or adventure of the day.

2. Walk the Pa'rus Trail ~ Adventure doesn't always mean a grueling workout. The Pa'rus Trail follows the Virgin River through open scenery with beautiful views of Zion's surrounding cliffs. It's an excellent choice for you if you're looking for a more relaxed experience. It's also particularly noteworthy for families traveling with pets. Zion has strict pet restrictions, but leashed pets are permitted on the Pa"rus Trail. Bicycles are also permitted here. Consider walking near the end of the day when the light changes it will make the cliffs more beautiful. This trail is perfect for families, casual walkers, cyclists, photographers and travelers wanting a gentler outdoor experience.

3. Discover the Emerald Pools ~ A striking landscape where slick rock cliffs, green desert vegetation and thriving desert flora surround the Emerald Pools Area. This trails provides you an opportunity to experience a different side of Zion while enjoying the beautiful canyon scenery. Depending on the route and current trail access visitors can choose an outing suited to their group's abilities. The trail access can change so be sure to check with the National Park Services for condition's before beginning your hike. Remember, enjoying nature doesn't mean racing toward the finish line. Stop. Look around. Listen to the water. Take the family's photographs if you can. Because, sometimes those little moments become memories we keep for a lifetime.

4. Walk The Narrows ~ For travelers looking for something truly different The Narrows is one of the best experiences if you can do it by offering one of Zion's signature adventures. Instead of simply walking beside the river, hikers can actually walk through the Virgin River while enormous canyon walls rise all around you. Also, you'll get to walk on on and over the river rocks. so watch your footing. The bottom up Narrows experience begins beyond Riverside Walk at the Temple of Sinawava. Conditions can change quickly. This can vary considerably because hikers are traveling in water and flash floods are a serious hazard. The National Park Service advises visitors to know the river conditions before going.

Pro-tip: This adventure requires preparation. It's recommend wearing proper footwear to support your feet and ankles. Bring sufficient water. Use a walking stick to help guide while walking over the rocks, listen for current weather conditions and park information. Don't forget to bring a water proof container for your phone or camera.

5. Challenge Yourself at Angels Landing ~ For experienced hikers looking for a major challenge. Angels Landing is one of Zion's most recognizable adventures. However, this is not an ordinary family hiking trail. It has zig zag, switch backs along the way to the top. The final section includes a steep narrow ridge, anchored chains and significant exposure, with sheer drop-offs reaching approximately 1,000 feet in places. A permit is required to continue beyond Scout Lookout onto the top of Angels Landing.  If you, your family and visitors that aren't comfortable with heights can choose one of Zion's many other trails instead. Also there is a half way point you may choose to stop if you don't want to continue all the way to the top.

Pro-tip: Get an early start in the morning before other people such as the first shuttle out. The trail get's really busy with crowds going up and down Angels Landing. As you climb, you'll need to pay close attention to the side drop offs, narrow areas, also by watching yourself and others so it does not cause you or someone else to fall. The goal is returning home with a beautiful experience so don't rush.

6. Explore Kolob Canyons ~ Another one of the joys of visiting Zion is discovering that there is much more to the park than its famous main canyon. If heading toward Kolob Canyons in the Northwestern portion of Zion you can get another perspective on the park's remarkable landscape. The National Park Service specifically recommends exploring this part of Zion which offers its own hiking opportunities and scenery. If you're planning on spending several days in the region this can be a wonderful addition to your itinerary.

Try this: Pack a lunch. Bring a backpack and your camera. Turn your day into a slower scenic outing rather than trying to fit several major hikes into one afternoon.

7. Make It a Family Learning Adventure ~ By visiting the National Park it can become one of the world's greatest classrooms for your family. Stop at the visitors center and talk with the Park Rangers to learn about Zion's geology, wildlife, plants and human history. Families can also look into Zion's Junior Ranger activities and ranger led programs. The park encourages visitors to check current schedules because program times and availability varies.

8. Take the Zion Mount Carmel Route ~ Give your hiking shoes a rest and experience driving Zion from the road. Zion Mount Carmel Highway takes travelers through another dramatic portion of the park. Majestic views of the beautiful scenery continue to change as the elevation and the landscape shift. While you drive be sure to stop at designated viewpoints and see the scenic stops rather than just driving straight through. One of the greatest pleasures of visiting a National Park like Zion is having permission to take the long way.

9. Step Back In Time Near Grafton ~ Your adventure continues near Rockville. You can map out Grafton Ghost Town. A preserved historic town where old structures and has a historic cemetery offers people a glimpse into the area's pioneer past. There aren't the services that you'd expect at a tourist attraction. It however has a self-guided historical stop where visitors can walk, read interactive information, take pictures of the scenery and imagine a very different chapter of life in southern Utah. By visiting other places of interest or towns near by it will give you other alternatives into your family road trip.

10. Leave Room for an Unplanned Adventure ~ Finally don't schedule and plan every minute. Some of the best travel memories tend to happen between the attractions on the fly.

Try these: Stop often for an unexpected overlook. Take a walk. Have a picnic. Watch the sunlight at sunrise or sunset. Photograph the wildflowers and beautiful scenic canyons. Sit beside the river. Explore the gateway community of Springdale. Let your children choose one activity.

Make Your Own Adventure ~ Zion can be adventurous, peaceful, educational, and challenging. That's what makes the experience and traveling so special. Go see the towering cliffs and famous trails but leave room for the quieter experiences, too, Smell the morning air. Enjoy the family conversations while walking on the trail. Listen to the sounds of the Virgin River flowing peacefully. When you travel, it reminds us that beautiful living doesn't always happen inside beautiful rooms. Sometimes, it happens with dusty hiking shoes, a backpack, the people we love and a trail leading somewhere we've never been before.

Before Traveling Tips ~ Check the current weather and trail conditions. View the Zion National Park Services for more information. Review Zion Canyon shuttle operations. Reserve camping ahead when needed due to park campgrounds fill up quickly. Apply in advance for required hiking or wilderness permits. Carry plenty of water and sun protection. Choose trails appropriate for everyone in your group. Never enter a slot canyon when flash flood conditions are possible. Don't leave your trash. Give wildlife plenty of space and allow extra time rather than trying to see everything in one day.

Travel Thought ~ You don't always have to travel the farthest or climb the highest to find adventure. Sometimes the adventure begins when we simply choose to go somewhere new, and make room for wonder. Happy Travels!
